Hiring the right people is about growing your culture. Three things to keep in mind.

Building starts from the inside. With culture and values that come from the owners and leaders.

It's easy to get derailed in business, and here are several areas where falling off the tracks can kill you.

Hiring clones of yourself: sure, it's great when you meet candidates that seem to reflect your personality, but hiring people who are smarter than you is important.

After a while, you will have a group of people who are brilliant and who can think for themselves. That's priceless.

Hiring too fast. Needing people to grow the business is a great feeling. But don't let it rush you to judgment.

Develop a set of criteria for hiring that emerge from your company culture and ethos. Use them to query your candidates to see how they fit within the culture. Without this your are rolling the dice and you won't win in the long run.

Expanding too fast.

A few markets begin to do well. Reorders are on the rise. A great feeling! This sense of euphoria begins to push you to open new markets. This means more investment in new people and new presence.


Consolidate first.

Concentrate on developing the successes you currently generate. This will allow you to learn how success feels and how your people and culture react to some wins. You'll see how to improve your brand and make it more desirable.

You'll be happier for it.
